Computing - Creating Cartoons

In computing, we have been learning to create our own comics online and explore this fun way of telling a story. We have been using our computing skills to make comics with backgrounds, characters, text and stickers. Creating comics digitally can be quicker than making a comic on paper because all the tools and images are already available. We have acquired lots of new key knowledge, including:

  • the different parts of a comic: scenes, backgrounds, characters, narration, speech bubbles and stickers
  • how to add, resize and organise coloured or picture backgrounds
  • how to add, resize and organise characters and objects across different panels
  • how to add narration using text and direct speech using speech bubbles

This computing unit linked particularly well with the virtual workshop we took part in with Emma from Go Sketch. Emma led an interactive workshop in which pupils learned to draw cartoon characters using pencil and paper. The workshop supported the children in developing ideas for their own digital comics and helped them consider how characters, settings and dialogue work together to communicate a story.
