Maths the Seahouses Way
To cultivate an enthusiasm for lifelong learning through a curriculum which reflects our rural and coastal context, adapting to the needs of our children- locally, nationally and globally.
At Seahouses Primary School, we endeavour to provide the highest possible quality of mathematical education that meets the requirements specified in the National Curriculum. We aim to provide a high standard of mathematical education that will promote knowledge, skills and understanding at all levels to prepare children for the world around them.
We are committed to ensuring all of our work focuses on a teaching for mastery approach and have adopted the 'White Rose Maths Hub' approach to provide a curriculum plan that will support 'Teaching for Mastery'. All staff have been trained
As a school we have been trained in the Mastering Number programme, developed by the National Centre For Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (NCETM). This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. Our practice is also informed by the latest research from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).
A significant amount of time is devoted to developing key number concepts each year. This ensures student build their fluency as number sense will affect their success in other areas of mathematics. Students who are successful with number are much more confident mathematicians.
Alongside these curriculum overviews our aim is also to provide an assessment for each termly plan. Each assessment will be made up of two parts:
Part 1: Fluency based on arithmetic practice.
Part 2: Reasoning based questions.
Efficient fluency and reasoning skills enable children to successfully engage in analytical situations that require the ability to solve problems.
