29.06.26 Geography Fieldwork River Trip
As part of our geography curriculum, we have been studying rivers. To enrich this learning, Class 3 undertook a fieldwork trip, tracing the route of the River Aln from mouth to source. Throughout the day, the pupils developed a range of geographical fieldwork skills through first-hand observation and practical investigation.
We stopped at several locations along the river, including Little Ryle, Alnwick and Alnmouth. At each site, the children examined the physical features of the river, observed wildlife and followed the course of the river. They also created detailed field sketches of selected sections of the River Aln, enabling them to record and analyse the physical features of the landscape with care and precision.
On the beach, the children created 3D models of the course of the River Aln, showing the features of the upper, middle and lower courses. This practical activity helped them to demonstrate their understanding of how rivers change from source to mouth and to apply their learning in a meaningful context.
Fieldwork is an essential element of our geography curriculum, as it allows children to deepen their understanding through direct experience. It develops their ability to observe, question, compare and interpret the world around them, whilst also strengthening independence, curiosity and confidence in using geographical vocabulary and techniques.
It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about our uniquely beautiful local area and to appreciate the importance of rivers in shaping the landscape.
