Art Sculptures Autumn 1 Project
Over the course of this half-term, Year 5 and 6 pupils have thoroughly enjoyed an immersive art project focusing on the key skills of drawing, collage, and sculpture. Inspired by the AccessArt '2D Drawing to 3D Making' pathway, the project initially developed the children's ability to scale up original animal drawings using the technical grid method. Pupils then explored spatial awareness, learning how to manipulate and position their designs so the animals appeared three-dimensional—capturing realistic movements such as sitting, lying down, or moving.
Pupils looked closely at the distinct styles of two contemporary artists. Using the work of illustrator Claire Harrup as inspiration, they experimented with mark-making and texture, discovering how combining these techniques with collage can breathe life into a flat drawing. They were also deeply inspired by Turner Prize-winning artist Lubaina Himid, examining how she transforms flat, painted figures into vibrant 3D installations. In the true spirit of Himid’s interactive work, the class created their own art gallery, allowing everyone to walk among and engage with the sculptures. The final engineering challenge required the children to design and build sturdy stands to display their work for maximum impact. Through trial, error, and brilliant perseverance, the children loved watching their concepts come to life, producing outstanding final sculptures.
