Reading at Seahouses Primary

The majority of children in KS1 will continue with daily phonics sessions. Please click here for more information on phonics and early reading at Seahouses Primary School. Children in KS2 who still require daily phonics will also continue to access Read, Write Inc.

Once the children complete the phonics programme they will take part in Guided Reading sessions where they will explore texts in depth by answering a variety of comprehension questions (VIPERS- vocabulary, inference, predict, explain, retrieve, sequence/summarise), as well as continuing to develop their fluency.

Children will also access Reading Plus which is a programme used both in and outside of school to support children with their fluency and comprehension.

More information about Reading Plus can be found on their website

Home Reading

We provide the children with three texts each week. These include the following:

- A levelled reading book that has been allocated to your child based on recent reading assessments in school.

- A book of their choice from our well-stocked library.

- A book for pleasure. This book may or may not be at the child's reading level but will be a book they wish to read for enjoyment.

In addition to the texts provided at school, all children in KS1 also have an account for Oxford Reading Buddy

This is an online library of appropriately, levelled texts (based on recent reading assessments) for the children to access at home. There are are also comprehension quizzes linked to the texts to assess how well the children are understanding what they are reading. Teachers monitor the children's progress and are able to put support in place should any areas for concern be raised.

A Parent's/ Carer's guide to Reading Buddy can be found here. All children have their log in information but if you are struggling to access your child's account please contact the office to let them know.
