Our First Pupil Parliament
This week children from Years 4 and 5 took part in our first Pupil Parliament at Swansfield Park Primary School. Pupil Parliament is an excellent learning opportunity for the children, empowering them with knowledge of the democratic process and an understanding of how to make their voices heard in order to effect change. Our school joined five other schools from the local area to take part in a debate entitled, 'Should screen time be limited for children?'
We started the day by designing rosettes and creating a manifesto for our party. We listened to evidence from experts at Thompson Opticians in Alnwick, before researching the different views surrounding this issue and deciding upon our party's motion. We ended the day with an all party debate conducted in the same manner and following the same rules as the House of Commons.
We learned so much about the democratic process through this active leaning and are looking forward to our next debate (voted for by a majority of the children)...
'Should children be allowed to drive?'
